Jebel Ori School of Peace

Jebel Ori School of Peace
Sponsored by Glenbrook South High School

The following was dictated to Suliman Giddo (Director of the Darfur Peace and
Development Organization) by the headmaster of Jebel Ori in September 2007.
He loosely translated it to English. Other details have been added to clarify information.

Jebel Ori school is currently housed in a mix of 4 temporarily tents (UN style large
weatherproof tents) and 8 other classes made of local materials (mud and thatched roof
buildings, similar to Darfurian house structures but larger). One office for staff has been
built near the creek. Teachers are living in three huts. The water source nearest the
school is 4 miles away. Water is brought to the school using a donkey to fill the
communal water barrel. There are currently no medical services or clinics in the near
area.

Thank you for adding our school to your Darfur schools project. You have solved a very
difficult problem. Many students were not attending because their parents were not able
to pay even the .75 a month for their children to attend (required to assist in covering the
schools very basic needs). Now we are so pleased that we don’t need to ask that
parents contribute.

The school currently has 573 students enrolled, 10 teachers, 4 staff and 12 school board
members.

The last thing I can say is just thank you to all who are supporting us. We have been
neglected by our own government and Muslim brothers and it is a blessing that we are
getting this much attention and support from the people of the US who don’t even know
who we are .

Abdulaziz Abdalla, headmaster
